If you’re planning a trip to or out of Johor Bahru, chances are you’ll find yourself at Larkin Sentral. As the main transportation hub for the southern peninsula of Malaysia, it’s a bustling hive of activity. But let’s be honest—navigating a busy bus terminal can feel a bit overwhelming, especially if it’s your first time.
Where do you buy tickets? Do you need to print them? What on earth is a CTS?
Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Whether you’re heading to Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, or just hopping on a local bus to the mall, understanding the system at Larkin will save you time and stress. Here is everything you need to know about buying bus tickets at Larkin Sentral.
Purchasing Tickets at the Counter
For those who prefer face-to-face interaction or paying with cash, the traditional counter method is still very much alive. However, things have changed a bit over the years to make the process smoother.
The Central Ticketing System (CTS)
Since 15 December 2017, Larkin Sentral has operated under a Centralised Ticketing System (CTS). In the past, you might have had to hunt down specific operator booths for different bus companies. Now, the system is consolidated.
To buy a ticket, simply head to Counters 1 – 8. These are the designated counters for purchasing new tickets for express buses. You just need to tell the staff your destination and preferred time, and they will show you the available options from various operators.
Exchanging Online Vouchers
If you have already purchased your ticket online through third-party platforms (like EasyBook), you often cannot head straight to the boarding gate. You likely have a booking confirmation or voucher, not a boarding pass.
To get your actual boarding pass, take your booking confirmation to Counters 9 – 14. These counters are specifically for exchanging vouchers. You’ll receive a physical boarding pass equipped with a QR code, which is essential for entering the departure area.
Buying Tickets Online
Let’s face it: queuing up at a counter isn’t everyone’s idea of fun. Buying your ticket online is generally the most convenient option, allowing you to secure your seat days or weeks in advance.
How to Buy Online
You have two main choices here:
- Larkin Sentral’s Official Website: You can book directly through the terminal’s portal (GoLarkin or LarkinSentral.my).
- Third-Party Portals: Sites like EasyBook offer varied options and sometimes different user interfaces that travellers might prefer.
Understanding the Fees
This is where it can get a little tricky, so pay close attention to the fine print.
- The RM1 Online Charge: When you book directly through Larkin Sentral’s online system, there is typically a handling fee known as the “Online Charge” of RM1.
- Third-Party Charges: If you book via other portals, you might see a “Facility Charge” or similar administrative fees. It is commonly noted that an extra charge (often around RM2 in total when combining facility and handling fees) applies when exchanging or processing these tickets.
- The “Hidden” Cost: Be aware that Larkin Sentral imposes fees on top of the standard bus fare. Reports indicate that regardless of whether you book direct or via a third party, you are likely paying around RM2 extra in total (comprising facility and handling charges) compared to the base fare. It’s a small amount, but it’s good to know so you aren’t surprised by the final checkout price.
Using Self-Service Kiosks
If you want to skip the counter queues but haven’t bought a ticket online, look for the self-service ticketing kiosks located around the terminal.
These machines are user-friendly and allow you to browse schedules, select seats, and pay for tickets without speaking to a teller. They are integrated with the CTS, meaning the ticket you print out is your valid boarding pass.
Pros:
- Generally shorter queues than the manned counters.
- You can take your time comparing bus timings.
Cons:
- They may accept cashless payments only (cards or e-wallets), so have your payment method ready.
- If the machine runs out of paper or encounters an error, you’ll have to join the queue at the counter anyway.
Understanding Boarding Passes
At Larkin Sentral, your ticket isn’t just a receipt—it’s your key to the gates. The boarding pass you receive (either from the counter, kiosk, or printed online) contains vital information:
- Passenger Details: Your name and ID/Passport number.
- Travel Details: Bus operator, platform number, and departure time.
- QR Code: This is the most important part.
The QR Code Scan
You cannot enter the departure hall without scanning this QR code. The gantry gates leading to the waiting area work similarly to train station gates. You scan your pass, the gate opens, and you proceed to the secure waiting area. This system ensures that only valid passengers are crowding the departure hall, making it safer and more comfortable for everyone.
Getting to Larkin Sentral
Before you can buy a ticket at Larkin, you need to get to Larkin. As a major hub, it is well-connected.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis and Grab cars can drop you off directly at the main entrance. It’s the most direct method but can be pricier depending on traffic.
Navigating the Departure Hall
Once you have your boarding pass and have scanned your QR code, you enter the departure hall.
- The 30-Minute Rule: You are generally required to enter the departure hall at least 30 minutes before your bus is scheduled to leave. This gives you ample time to find your gate and ensures you don’t miss the bus if it arrives early.
- The Gates: Domestic and international express buses typically depart from doors (gates) 3 – 14. Check your boarding pass or the digital screens for your specific gate number.
- Facilities: The waiting hall is air-conditioned, which provides a welcome relief from the Johor heat. There are seats available, so you can wait comfortably until your bus arrives.
Buying Larkin Bus Tickets with Easybook
Navigating Larkin Sentral doesn’t have to be a headache. Whether you choose the convenience of online booking to buy a Larkin bus ticket, the speed of a kiosk, or the reliability of a counter, the Centralised Ticketing System keeps things relatively organised.
Quick Recap:
- Buy Online for peace of mind (but expect a small handling fee).
- Go to Counters 1-8 to buy on the spot.
- Go to Counters 9-14 to exchange online vouchers for boarding passes.
- Arrive 30 minutes early to scan into the departure hall.
Safe travels on your next journey from Larkin!
